Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Fill Your Tub
Fill a sink, tub, or large bucket with lukewarm water – excessive heat can damage the rope. Heads up – really dirty ropes can stain a white tub so using a stainless sink or plastic bin is nice.

Step 2: Add Rope Wash
Tear open a single-use packet and pour into the water. Ensure it dissolves.

Step 3: Flake The Rope
Pile your rope loosely, removing any debris, knots or kinks.

Step 4: Submerge The Rope
Gently move it around with your hands to help the solution reach all parts of the rope.

Step 5: Wait For 30 Minutes
Let your rope soak for 30 minutes to loosen dirt and grime.

Step 6: Use Your Rope Brush
Wrap the rope around the brush. Hold the brush firmly and pull it through with the other hand.

Step 7: Drain The Tub
Empty the tub and lightly squeeze the rope to remove extra water.

Step 8: Rinse With Water
Rinse the rope thoroughly, gently moving it around to wash away any leftover dirt and soap residue.

Step 9: Drain & Dry
Drain the water and lay your rope to dry (not in sunlight). Store only when fully dry.

Step 10: Climb On
Climb safer and belay smoother with a clean rope. A little care goes a long way!
Washing Machine Method
Using a front-loading washing machine is also a common and accepted method, just be sure to follow the proper steps.
- Untangle and inspect your rope for any damage.
- When using a washing machine, daisy chain the rope and put it in a mesh laundry bag.
- Set your front-loading washing machine to a delicate cycle with cold or lukewarm water.
- Add the recommended amount of rope wash (one-use packet). Avoid regular detergents or bleach.
- Start the wash cycle. Run two rinse cycles to thoroughly rinse all the soap out of the rope.
- Remove the rope promptly, uncoil it, and dry it completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat.
